OpenXR is an open, royalty-free standard for access to Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) platforms, devices and 3D configurators. It will be developed by a working group led by the consortium of the Khronos Group. OpenXR was announced by the Khronos Group on 27 February 2017 during GDC 2017. A preliminary version of the standard was released on March 18, 2019 to obtain feedback from developers.

What is OpenXR?

Architecture.

The standard aims to finally provide two components: an API for application developers and a device layer for VR or AR hardware, which represents an abstraction interface with the device itself. The preliminary 0.90 version contained an API, whereby the device layer is planned as a plugin interface for post 1.0 versions.

Timetable.

In March 2017, the Khronos Group provisionally planned to release the first version of the API by the end of 2018. The API was released as a preliminary version in March 2019, with a plug-in device interface planned for versions after 1.0.
