People from communities by sharing things that are important to them with others – through photos, videos, and increasingly through more effective media types. Recently, 3D posts (for example about 3D configurators) have been introduced that allow people to see and interact with a digital object from all sides in Facebook`s news feed. It responds instantly to scrolling and touching and lets content jump off the screen. It also opens the door to a future where people can bring interesting objects and experiences – whether they are characters for games and movies, architectural models, museum artifacts or fully interactive scenes.

The industry standard glTF 2.0 file format for facebook 3D posts has been supported for a few days now. This means that artists and creators on facebook can easily provide richer and higher quality 3D content from even greater variety of sources.

With glTF 2.0 support for textures, lighting and realistic rendering techniques – from rough to shiny, from metallic to soft, 3D artwork can now come alive on facebook. 3D posts also support unlit workflows for photogrammetry and stylized art.

With glTF 2.0 support, facebook users will have even more ways to share 3D content across different creation tools and platforms. New graph API endpoints with 3D mail support have also been added, allowing developers to seamlessly incorporate 3D sharing into any application – allowing users to share interactive objects or scenes directly on facebook with just one click. With our new Open Graph tag, developers can automatically view 3D content from their websites in 3D when it`s shared on facebook. In addition, artists using 3D authoring software can drag and drop their 3D files directly onto facebook to create a 3D post.
Our early partners have already implemented some exciting new ways to share 3D content on facebook. For example, people can easily share 3D memories captured with an Xperia XZ1 phone using Sony`s 3D Creator app. On the web you can share objects directly from the Oculus web gallery and soon from Google`s Poly. In addition, the 3D modeling software Modo has added the ability to create facebook-capable files, with support soon to be extended to other 3D programs.
A cross-platform 3D ecosystem.
Facebook hope that these new tools will help more artists, developers and businesses share their creations with others, so people can discover and explore rich 3D content directly from their news feed. We`ve already seen some incredibly interactive objects uploaded to facebook today – including a logo parrot, a Jurassic Park dinosaur, a Wayfair virtual living room, a handbag scanned with a Sony phone, and a new Magic Archer character in Clash Royale from Supercell. These people can enjoy this content in the newsfeed or bring it to facebook spaces to share with friends in VR.
In the future, there will be a seamless digital world where people can share immersive experiences and objects such as VR, AR and facebook newsfeeds. To achieve this, facebook will continue to work to support even higher quality 3D models, enable interactive animation and bring 3D content to the real world with AR. This is just the beginning and it will be exciting to see how the 3D content ecosystem on facebook will continue to grow as people, developers and artists give free rein to their creativity.
