The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) starts today and “The Foundry” will present their new MakerBot Kit for Modo (ideal software to create a individual 3D configurator). The announcement promises good things for individual 3D printers and businesses that need an industry standard approach that increases the accuracy, quality and flexibility of 3D printing in general. Designers using Modo can now access MakerBot’s online 3D asset sharing site, Thingiverse, to download 3D models that are ready to print or upload their own unique designs. You can also use the MakerBot Cloud Library within Modo to store, share, and retrieve 3D assets. This year appears to be a year in which the growth of 3D printing will grow exponentially, especially with the development of software solutions such as Modo.
Below you will find the official press release of “The Foundry”:
MakerBot, a global leader in the desktop 3D printing industry, and “The Foundry” unveiled the MakerBot® Kit for Modo at this year’s Consumer Electronic Shows (CES). With the MakerBot Kit for Modo, for the first time, users can create and edit designs using The Foundry’s Modo 801 features and publish them directly to MakerBot’s Thingiverse.com or save them privately with the MakerBot Cloud Library, all from within Modo. Thingiverse® is one of the largest 3D design communities in the world with more than 500,000 downloadable digital 3D files and the best places to view, share and download 3D print files.
This innovative 3D design and printing solution is part of the company’s strategic partnership to streamline the 3D workflow to make creating and printing 3D objects easier and faster. The partnership, announced earlier this year, is designed to revolutionize the 3D printing workflow for Modo users. Optimizing this workflow is critical as 3D printing “has become a major disruptor in the global economy,” said the Consumer Electronics Association, which doubled the 3D Printing Marketplace Footprint at this year’s CES.
With the MakerBot Kit for Modo, Thingiverse users for the first time have a powerful, integrated tool with which they can create their own 3D designs or extend other people’s designs using common interfaces and file formats.
Users can then easily and seamlessly transfer their creative work to Thingiverse or the MakerBot Cloud Library and access these files from their personal MakerBot Cloud Library via MakerBot Desktop, MakerBot Mobile, or MakerBot PrintShop™ The common result is an increase in the quality and quantity of objects created by 3D printing.
With the MakerBot Kit for Modo the following tasks can be accomplished:
- Load and save .thing files through native file support.
- Authentication of MakerBot nodes from Modo.
- Explore Thingiverse and download free objects/files.
- Update and delete objects on Thingiverse and your own personal MakerBot Cloud Library from within Modo.
- Generate photorealistic renderings of objects and upload the cover image for this article to Thingiverse and/or the MakerBot Cloud Library from within Modo.
- Upload and save Modo (.Ixo) files to Thingiverse and/or its MakerBot Cloud Library for better editing and easy sharing with other MakerBot users.
The Foundry’s software is already being used for some really incredible graphics and special effects and in movies and games by companies like Pixar, ILM, Double Negative, Walt Disney Animation, Weta Digital and Sony Pictures Imageworks. “We believe that the ability to output these designs directly into a 3D print file and then share or accommodate them within Thingiverse will be incredibly exciting to realize these digital creations and bring them into the physical world,” said Jenny Lawton, CEO of MakerBot. MakerBot will demonstrate the power of the MakerBot kit for Modo at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
