The company relies on VR experiences and 3D configurators in the store to present room layouts.
Macy`s plans to use VR by the summer of this year to sell furniture to customers in 50 stores, making it the latest company to jump on the bandwagon of using VR to sell products after VentureBeat.
Unlike Amazon, Ikea or Target – all of which have a kind of Augmented Reality (AR) furniture experience so users can see what a table or chair in their living room might look like – Macy`s relies on VR by using Head Mounted Displays to showcase its furniture. As Furniture Today reports, customers in Macy`s stores can equip a room with furniture with a tablet and then test the design by entering the room in VR.
Macy`s sees the technology as allowing the company tho show a wider range of furniture without having so much space to present it in its stores. Jeff Gennete (CEO of Macy`s) also claims that the VR demos have led to fewer customer concerns about furniture fittings and increased sales – especially for items that were not even physically in a store.
Macy`s plans to roll out VR demos to up to 50 stores by summer. If successful, this technology will also be used in other stores.
