ActionScript is an object-oriented programming language (OOP), which was developed especially for the animation of web pages. ActionScript was originally released with Macromedia Flash 4 und improved for Flash 5. It is also a sophisticated version of the scripting language introduced in Flash 3. ActionScript allows developers to create screen environments that respond to user input using the keyboard or mouse. ActionScript is an event-based language: like in real life, actions are triggered by events.

What is ActionScript?

ActionScript was developed after the model of ECMA (European Computer Manufacturers Association) -262, an international standard for JavaScript. The Flash 5 version introduces new ActionScript syntax, conventions, and features that work similar to JavaScript, automatically familiarizing most web developers with the language. Flash 5 also includes a new ActionScript editing environment that automates editing tasks and reduces development time.
