Visual Studio Express (VSE) is a freeware version of the Microsoft Toolset Visual Studio Dev Environment Toolset. It is a slimmed down version, which is still reasonably functional. Microsoft describes the VSE toolset as a “free, easy to use and easy to learn software solution for hobbyists, beginners and students”.
Microsoft divides its Visual Studio Express offerings into four overlapping categories, each with its own specific components:
Web: Includes Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, a Beginner Developer Learning Center and access to the ASP.NET community, as well as a Personal Web Site StarterKit and the Facebook Development Toolkit.
Game: Includes Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition, Visual C# 2008 Express Edition, and Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition, the Beginner Game Development Series, and some sample games (Space Blitz, Rocket Commander)
Windows: Includes Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition, Visual C# 2008 Expression Edition, and Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition, a Beginner Developer Learning Center, a Facebook Developer Toolkit, and a Coding4Fun Developer Pack 2008
Hardware: Includes descriptions of projects for A Disco Dance Floor, various hardware projects including Xbox 360, a digital camera, a remote-controlled car, Visual Studio Express and the Microsoft Robotics Studio, and home automation projects. The three primary programming languages: Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition, Visual C# 2008 Express Edition, and Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition are also introduced here.
