Today, complex software to create 3D configurators and a specific skill set are required to create compelling Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) experiences. This software also requires the creation of 3D objects on a 2D screen – something our brain wasn`t designed for. Behind Blocks from Google is the idea that creating objects in VR could make work much easier. Google Blocks is a VR application for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift that lets you create beautiful 3D objects in no time at all.
Blocks is simple enough to be used by anyone, even without modeling experience. It is designed to feel more like playing with children`s blocks than working with traditional modeling software. Starting with a simple set of shapes, a color palette, and an intuitive set of tools, you`ll be able to naturally and quickly create almost anything you can imagine, from a piece of watermelon to an entire scene in a forest.
When your creation is finished, you can export it as an OBJ to use in AR or VR applications you`re developing. You can also oublish it on the web or create an animated gif. At vr.google.com/objects you can explore other people`s creations to get new inspiration or use them as a starting point for your own remix.
We`ve already seen amazing creations and applications from 3D modelers, artists, developers and even people without any modeling experience – from a robot that could play the leading role in a game, to a skyline designed as a background for a tilt brush sketch, to come cacti made just for fun.
